According to the Royal Institute Dictionary in 1982, Kranok represents a captivating pattern of lines and garlands that draw inspiration from the beauty of nature. When written as Kanok, the word means gold.  The essence of Lai Kranok originates from the mesmerizing dance of flames, gracefully shaping the sacred lotus and other cultural symbols. Throughout history, sages bestowed upon it the alternate name of Kra-nok, symbolizing the harmonious coexistence of birds and woods (Dong Nok Dong Mai). Influenced by the profound teachings of Buddhism, the intricate form of Kranok illustrates the enlightened jātaka, gracefully depicting the multitude of lives, actions, and spiritual practices that pave the way towards ultimate enlightenment. Its intricate patterns also embody the sublime qualities and virtues of the Buddha, such as boundless generosity, while imparting invaluable moral lessons that revolve around good deeds and the eternal cycle of rebirth.

Swans in lantern

Swan pattern or “Nok Kin Nam Ruam Ton” is deeply rooted in Thai culture and symbolizes love, harmony, unity, and sharing. This exquisite pattern has been cherished by the urban people in Chiang Mai for generations, originating from ancient woven fabric designs. It holds a significant place in the ladies’ royal costumes of the Lanna court, including the Tin Jok cloth worn by the esteemed royal consort, Chao Dara Rasmi Prachaya, during the reign of King Chulalongkorn, Rama V. The pattern also beautifully showcases the Dok Kaew Motif, a representation of Orange Jasmin. With its refreshing scent and pure white petals, Orange Jasmin signifies the purity of a kind heart and the vibrancy of life.
