The use of textiles in ceremonial contexts in Indonesia, particularly the double ikat cloths from Bali known as Geringsing, has deep symbolic significance. These cloths, which are kept intact until they are used in rituals such as weddings and first haircuts, represent protection from harm. The intricate double ikat technique used to create geringsing is exclusively practiced in the Balinese village of Tenganan Pageringsingan. These textiles play a crucial role in life-crisis ceremonies and are also utilized in various other ceremonies throughout Bali, including those for children, tooth filing, marriage, illness, death, and temple adornments. Geringsing exemplifies the craftsmanship of Indonesian double ikat and holds significance not only in Indonesia but also in India and Japan. It embodies the identity and religious values of the Tenganan community, signifying a special spiritual belief bestowed by the God Batara Indra, the creator. These textiles are draped around temple sculptures and used in remedies against lameness and insanity.

Kain Songket Lepus Berakam is a traditional tubular garment exclusively worn by women. It holds great significance, serving as a breast cloth for brides or a shoulder cloth for young women, particularly in formal settings. The exquisite kembang manggis or mangosten flower motif adorning the fabric represents the virtues of sincerity and purity. “Lepus” refers to the intricate gold-thread weaving that covers the entire surface of the cloth, known as Songket, while “berakam” signifies the beautiful embroidery that enhances its overall splendor.

According to the National Museum of the Philippines, the diamonds’ intricate mata-mata pattern represents the beauty of rice grains. When combined with the Xs shape, it becomes a symbol of wealth and gratitude. A geometrical pattern consisting of four stars shaping a single diamond in the sky signifies the immense hope for a bountiful harvest. These patterns are arranged into squared clusters, resembling rice mortars, creating a unique Yakan design. The use of Xs shapes and diamond motifs in the design presents an enchanting illusion of colorful threads, symbolizing the abundance and prosperity of the harvest.

According to the Royal Institute Dictionary in 1982, Kranok represents a captivating pattern of lines and garlands that draw inspiration from the beauty of nature. When written as Kanok, the word means gold.  The essence of Lai Kranok originates from the mesmerizing dance of flames, gracefully shaping the sacred lotus and other cultural symbols. Throughout history, sages bestowed upon it the alternate name of Kra-nok, symbolizing the harmonious coexistence of birds and woods (Dong Nok Dong Mai). Influenced by the profound teachings of Buddhism, the intricate form of Kranok illustrates the enlightened jātaka, gracefully depicting the multitude of lives, actions, and spiritual practices that pave the way towards ultimate enlightenment. Its intricate patterns also embody the sublime qualities and virtues of the Buddha, such as boundless generosity, while imparting invaluable moral lessons that revolve around good deeds and the eternal cycle of rebirth.

Kain Sukmaindera is a traditional woven fabric from Brunei Darussalam that holds significant cultural meaning. The fabric features rhomboid patterns arranged in repetition, adorned with floral motifs created by weaving colorful threads into petals. The centers of the flowers and rhomboids are further embellished with gold or silver threads, adding a touch of elegance. Typically, the design is set against a background of a single color. These textiles not only showcase exquisite craftsmanship but also carry symbolic representations of nature, spirituality, and cherished values in Brunei. They are often worn or used during special occasions, such as weddings, religious festivals, and other significant events, emphasizing their importance in the lives of the Bruneian people.

Supernatural symbols includes 4 images depicting the gods that exist permanently in the spiritual world of the Ta Oi community: Vavak (butterfly), which symbolizes ancestral soul, Aseap (bat) as the symbol of guardian that wards off evil spirits, Adang (spider) as the Guardian god of disease, and Chidoang avang (swallow’s tail) as the Spring god. Other than woven technique, this motifs are manifested through needle beadswork technique

“Profound spiritual fence, safeguarding against any malevolent spirits that may seek to intrude.”

Surrounded by the captivating presence of eight pointed stars as the symbol of fences, this pattern commonly used in textile decoration of the Hmong to safeguard against any malevolent spirits that may seek to intrude. As its name implies, this piece represents the need for safety and security within our community, especially in the mountainous regions that have long been plagued by dangerous creatures, diseases, and wars. This motif showcases carefully constructed fences made mostly of horizontal lines in various shades of blue, blending gracefully from light sky to deep navy. These lines interweave with larger white sections, resembling the eyes within a network of protective barriers. Just like unwavering Hmong community strength, these lines, layers, and sections symbolize the strong and dense fences required to ensure the collective well-being.

A profound bond with the Divine, beckoning the gods of abundance and happiness to shower their blessings, warding off malevolent spirits.

Hmong people believe that beautiful patterns, such as this diamond pattern, will help them maintain a close connection to the Deity, invite in the gods of wealth and joy to bestow blessings onto their families while fighting against evil spirits. The cross added in between of diamonds symbolized the protection from evil spirit and the cross-shaped diamond symbolized xwm kab or house and ancestral spirit altar, which communicates protection from ancestral spirits to descendants of the family and the lineage. Each pattern, and each part of one pattern, is believed to fulfil multiple wishes at once. A diamond shape with zigzag lines separating four triangles signify houses of Hmong people that represents the cohesiveness of Hmong society and the harmonious relationship between families in a village. Zigzag motifs with flower embroideries, represent path of happiness and elders’ good wishes to young girls for her life’s journey for bright and future growth and full of happiness.
